Take a brief glance at the 1005HA and you’ll have trouble telling it apart from its pricier sibling. The glossy lid and smooth sleek design combine to make the 1005HA unmistakeably gorgeous.

Put the stablemates next to each other, however, and the differences are glaringly obvious. Indeed, where the 1008HA’s captive battery allows it to remain impossibly slim, the 1005HA has a removable battery and this makes it more than a centimetre thicker.

It’s a sacrifice worth making for the extra stamina on offer, not to mention the ability to carry around multiple batteries for long journeys. You probably won’t need to resort to buying a spare, however, as its 4400mAh battery manages 6hrs 34mins on its own.

The 1005HA doesn’t lose much in the way of features. Bluetooth disappears to make some room in the budget, but draft-n wireless is still present. The larger chassis also accommodates an extra USB port, bringing the complement up to a total of three.

The keyboard can’t match those of Samsung’s netbooks, but it’s very close. With the keys stretching right to the very edges of the chassis, both the feel and layout is superb.

The dimpled trackpad might feel a little odd at first, but quickly proves very usable, and even manages to squeeze in a scroll zone along its right-hand edge.

The matte display is the only mild disappointment. Just like Samsung’s NC10 battery, the matte panel keeps reflections to a minimum at the cost of a noticeable grain across the panel. It struggles to differentiate both the lightest and darkest of shades too. But, this is no deal-breaker, and especially not considering the high brightness and strong colour reproduction.

In the final reckoning, it’s easy to overlook the 1005HA’s less-than-stellar display. It’s a good-looking, incredibly well-featured netbook at a price that leaves many of the pricier models on test looking distinctly out of touch with reality.

Samsung’s N110 battery ahead at the final furlong, but Asus deserves hearty congratulations for keeping the low-cost netbook dream alive.

Cheap laptop battery

What is a Netbook computer?

A Netbook is a new type of laptop computer, defined by size, price, horsepower, and operating system. They are small, cheap, under-powered, and run either an old or unfamiliar operating system.

Netbooks run either Windows XP Home edition or Linux (not only is Linux unfamiliar to many, but the versions of Linux on Netbooks are not the mainstream popular distributions). They do not run XP Professional, Vista, or OS X. Microsoft arbitrarily restricts Netbooks from running the Professional Edition of Windows XP. Likewise, Apple arbitrarily restricts OS X to Apple hardware and it has never played in the low-end realm that Netbooks occupy.* Vista requires too much horsepower to run well on a Netbook. HP has been the only company to offer Vista on a Netbook. The price, however, was so high that it’s debatable whether such a machine qualifies as a Netbook.

The market for netbooks — small notebook PCs with even tinier prices — exploded in the third quarter of this year, according to market researcher DisplaySearch LLC, as vendors aimed their wares at students during the back-to-school season.

The global market for netbooks, also known as mini-notebooks, was 5.61 million in the third quarter, up 160% from the second quarter, according to a statement today from DisplaySearch, an Austin-based research firm.

Acer Inc. displaced Asustek Computer Inc. (Asus) as the netbook market leader for the first time during the quarter, taking 38.3% of the market, compared to 30.3% for Asus.

Netbook global sales in the third quarter of 2008 hit 5.61 million units, an increase of 160% from the second quarter. Acer was at the top of the list with a 38.3% market share of all those units. With a 2008 sales level of 14 million units (over 2007’s one million sold), the market for netbooks is still relatively small, but the growth is explosive. The question is this: how much margin are manufacturers gaining on these small-priced PCs? In the latest quarter, HP was in third place and Dell was in fifth place, but Acer and Asus are completely stealing the show. If the netbook trend follows in 2009, Acer — the king of low retailer PC prices — should stay on top until this fad is over.

Acer, Asus, and Toshiba to make Snapdragon based netbooks

Acer and Toshiba are working on small notebooks using Qualcomm’s instant-on solution, Snapdragon. Actually, according to Manjitt Gill (the interviewee) it is more like always on.

“Mobile Computing Devices (MCDs) offer a revolution in computing and communications in a thin and light form factor with a 7-12” display and full keyboard. MCDs are perfect for viewing movies and maps, or editing spreadsheets and documents while also having access to full Internet browsing and social networking. Dual-mode MCDs allow for notebook and tablet/reading mode to further improve the user experience.”

“Our vision is that (the device is) always connected. Even when you shut it down, it’s still ‘on.’ (The laptop) goes to your Exchange server, gets your e-mail, puts it on the drive–solid-state or hard drive–and then when you’re ready to do e-mail, you flip it open and it’s right there. Instant on, always connected,”

There is some more interesting info in the interview, including how Qualcomm sees the differentiation between what it calls Mobile Computing Devices (MCD) and the already established Netbook. Intel is also revealing some details about how it has ramped up the ARM processor to compete.

So full day, always on and very mobile.. but it’s ARM based, Linux only. Could they really compete with Intel on more computer than phone like devices, netbooks?

It would need a lot of co-operation between them, Linux vendors and OEMs. Intel has been building their Linux only MID community for 2 years and all we have seen is very basic and not even nearly finished software. Hardware can enable, but to bring ARM based Linux netbook even near to current ones will need work.. maybe too much work?

Qualcomm seems to believe highly themselves as they are now naming Acer, Asus and Toshiba as their future Snapdragon customers:

“Companies including Acer, Asus, and Toshiba are planning devices based on Snapdragon, according to Qualcomm. Acer, for example, will initially introduce Qualcomm’s Gobi 3G modem into its devices, then gravitate to products based on Snapdragon.”

We will see it soon hopefully..
