With the start of another school year just around the corner, most of the big players in the notebook manufacturing industry will surely be coming up with their own line of new laptops that are specifically catered for the returning students. There will be a lot of makes and models to choose from – perhaps even too much for most of the consumers.

Most students will not need cutting edge technology when it comes to their laptops. The basic uses of most student notebooks include research, writing term papers, preparing presentations, and of course taking notes in class. Because of this, they most likely won’t require notebooks with top of the line features; functional netbooks should do the trick. 1GB of RAM, an Intel Atom processor, and Windows XP should be an appropriate combination that could fit the purposes of a majority of students. Also, extended battery life and some wear and tear durability are some other features that should come in handy.

Below are some of the best new netbooks of the year that should help students on their way to that much coveted “A”.

Aspire One AOD250 (Acer)

With a price tag of only $247, Acer has exhibited its sympathy for most students’ economical budgets in the release of the Aspire One AOD250. This is currently one of the cheapest netbooks in the market that sports the standard 10-inch screen. The AOD250 is a slimmer version of its predecessor, but it is still equipped with the same basic combination – 1GB of RAM, the Intel Atom processor, and Windows XP. If one is not too happy with the 3-cell battery included in the kit, he can choose to buy an upgraded version with a 6-cell battery for $349.

Eee PC 1005HA (ASUS)

The Eee PC line has gained a formidable reputation among student circles and the PC 1005HA should be no different. Priced at a reasonable $389, this newest addition to the Eee family should be able to live up to the high standards set by its predecessors. Similar to Acer’s AOD250, the ASUS 1005HA will also have 1GB of RAM and a pre-installed Windows XP OS. However, the discrepancies begin with the latter’s Atom N280 processor, which is Intel’s newest. It will also come with a 160GB hard drive as well as a very impressive 9-hour maximum battery life – the longest we’ve seen in a netbook yet.

Latitude 2100 (Dell)

With the release of the Inspiron Mini line which is catered to the mid-level consumers, some might think that Dell may have forgotten about the student market. All doubt will be set aside once they encounter the Latitude 2100. Coming in a multitude of attractive color schemes (School Bus Gold, Chalkboard Black, and Ballfield Green), the Latitude 2100 will also be equipped with a tough exterior that sports a rubber coating and an antimicrobial keyboard. Users will also have the option to upgrade the Latitude 2100 so that it will have additional features such as a 6-cell battery and a fully optimized touch screen display.

Netbooks are a popular, cheaper alternative to full size notebook and desktop computers. While some netbooks ship with Linux, most consumers are opting for Windows XP-based netbooks. What makes a netbook different from a notebook or desktop computer? The primary difference is size – netbooks fall somewhere between the smallest notebook computers and a large smartphone. Netbooks are also less powerful PCs – to reduce the cost. As a result most netbooks can’t run Windows Vista and ship with Windows XP (and in a few cases Linux). To save even more money some consumers install OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. Netbooks are available from many manufacturers including Acer, Asus, HP, MSI, Dell, OLPC (One Laptop Per Child), Medion, Kohjinsha, Lenovo, Toshiba and others.

Netbooks have even caught the attention of Google – the search engine company – who are working with computer manufacturers on a next generation netbook based on Google’s Android platform. And Microsoft is looking for Windows 7 as its sequel to Windows XP for netbooks.

So where does that leave consumers? Should you race out and buy a netbook today with Windows XP or wait until later this year or 2010 for the Android / Windows 7 based netbooks? Or should I instead pay a bit more (likely $100 – $150) and get a full-size notebook?

Here are some things to think about:

Speed – if you are planning to run anything beyond email, basic Internet browsing and basic text document creation you should get a laptop; for the basics a netbook is good enough. And pretty much forget about gaming on a netbook – and likely most high quality Internet video. Power Typer- if you are power typer take some time to type on a netbook in a store – are you really going to put up with the smaller keyboard? If you are just tapping out Twitter updates or email messages you’ll be fine – but if you are writing your next novel the netbook’s smaller keyboard might be frustrating. Vista Experience: if you like or are used to the Windows Vista experience, look and feel and features then you only have two choices – get a full-size notebook now or wait until Windows 7 enabled netbooks come out later… and heres a catch – Windows 7 may be limited to basics for netbook use (details from Microsoft still pending). Compatibility: Linux-based netbooks have pretty much disappeared from the shelves of retailers because Linux doesn’t allow you to run popular applications like Microsoft Office. Google’s Android-based netbooks will likely have the same restriction. So if you use Microsoft Office at all stay clear of netbooks that aren’t running a Windows-based operating system (for now that means XP, later this year Windows 7).

One thing that isn’t different are problems. At support.com we deal with thousands of computer problems every day including netbook and laptop problems.

Netbook computers can be affected by the same problems as a full-size notebook or desktop computer. Because netbooks aren’t as powerful, anything impacting computer performance (like a virus or spyware, or too many installed programs) will be even more noticeable.

Common problems include:

Slow startup and/or shutdown time Frequent crashes or lockups Help getting printers and other devices / peripherals to work Problems upgrading netbook BIOS to the latest version USB devices are not accessible after being plugged in Problems transferring data to my used computer Unable to synchronize an iPod, iPhone, Treo, Centro, Windows Mobile or other portable device Problems accessing media content (pictures, videos, music) in Windows Media Player Windows Update errors preventing the latest security updates from being applied Errors with Flash, Java / Javascript, ActiveX Help connecting a used computer to a home network Frequent pop-ups and/or warnings that my PC is infected with a virus No audio or choppy audio / sound problems Problems installing and configuring anti-virus / anti-spyware software CD-ROM drive unavailable error

My advice is don’t jump out and buy a netbook just because it is $100 – $150 cheaper – it may be a great deal if you are the right kind of user. Take the time to really use a netbook in a store, understand how you will use it at home and make sure you can live with the limitations. If you can, netbooks are a great deal – if you can’t, you’ll just be returning the netbook and, at some stores, paying a restocking fee.

The first netbooks, such as the ASUS 701 4G and the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC, used Intel Celeron M and VIA C-7M CPUs. Now almost all netbooks use one of Intel’s low-end Atom CPUs, usually the Intel Atom N270 or Z520. Some newer netbooks feature the Atom N280, which consumes less power than the N270. Both these CPUs run at 1.6GHz,have a 512KB cache and a 533MHz front-side bus connection to the memory. The Intel Atom Z520 runs at 1.3GHz. They are all single-core CPUs but have Hyper-Threading. This means they are capable of running two processes simultaneously, which aids multitasking. The Intel Atom CPUs run much cooler than the Celeron and VIA CPUs (the VIA CPU in particular gets very hot inside the small confines of a netbook). AMD has released a low-voltage chip suitable for netbooks — the Athlon 64 L110 — but it isn’t widely used yet.

Of course, this being Vista, I have options — three of them, to be exact. To get a little more juice out of my Dell Inspiron 9200 battery, I can choose “Power saving” mode, where the screen goes so dim I feel like I’ve got cataracts and the processor churns so slowly that by the time the little hourglass/cursor stops spinning I’ve forgotten what it is I wanted to do in the first place. Then there’s the damn-the-batteries-full-speed-ahead “High performance” mode, which with Vista means something comparable to the Windows 98 machine I owned a decade ago. And then there’s “Balanced,” which offers the worst of both worlds.

Brownouts are caused by a drop in voltage. (This is when your lights dim.) They can cause damage to unprotected electrical items.

A Rolling Blackout, is intentionally caused by the power company as a last resort when the load demand is greater than the capability of the power supply. They are planned blackouts to temporarily reduce the load demands.

It seems a battered economy is good for the replacement battery business. Sales at some stores are up 20 percent as people try to extend the lives of their electronics. Store manager Jonathan Dascotte says a new cell phone battery avoids the cost of a new phone and a new two-year contract.

MobileMark came into widespread use several years ago. It measures Dell Vostro 1000 battery life while a machine is performing a number of tasks, including playing a DVD or creating a spreadsheet. The test was developed by the Business Applications Performance Corporation (BAPCo), a nonprofit trade group whose membership is made up mostly of laptop and chip manufacturers. Indeed, BAPCo counts among its members Intel, one of the very companies who would stand to profit from the use of the MobileMark test.

China is a technology hub and things like Dell or Acer laptop batteries retail for cheaper prices. These batteries can be sold in bulk or individually and needless to say, better prices are always scored when purchases are made in bulk. At this point another idea springs up. Why not sell cheap high quality replacement laptop batteries from China.

Becker predicts that this sort of purchase will account for 64 percent of light vehicle sales by 2030. Calculating that electric vehicles are 10 to 13 cents per mile cheaper to own than gasoline cars, Becker forecasts that electric vehicles could account for 24 percent of the light-vehicle fleet by 2030.
